I love lasagna. It's one of those dishes that can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. I use a pre-made sauce, but I've found that adding sausage to the meat mixture makes it exceptionally flavorful and delicious. Although I don't use a recipe, here is what I typically do. You are welcome to change the amounts of the spices to fit your taste.
1 lb ground beef
1 lb sausage (I used regular breakfast sausage, but Italian sausage or hot breakfast sausage would be good as well.)
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
1 jar Classico Four Cheese spaghetti sauce
1 pkg. oven-ready lasagna noodles
15 oz container ricotta cheese
1 egg
1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 tsp Italian seasoning
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 cups Mozzarella cheese (I love cheese, so I usually actually use a bag and a half of the shredded mozzarella)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13 casserole dish. Brown beef and sausage together in a medium sized skillet. Drain the excess fat. Add seasonings and mix well. Pour in sauce and let simmer for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, combine ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic, salt, and pepper in a separate bowl. Once the meat is done simmering, layer meat mixture, noodles, and cheese mixture in that order. Sprinkle some of the mozzarella cheese over the cheese mixture. Repeat layers. You want to end up with the meat mixture on top. Sprinkle with remaining mozzarella cheese. Bake for 30 minutes or until cheese is melted and lasagna is bubbling.
